Philip Le Claire

Candidate for Deputy Grouville and St. Martin

I was born and raised in Jersey and went to school at Val Plaisant, St Luke’s and St Helier Boys before taking up an apprenticeship as a Carpenter.  I joined the Army and became a Military Bandsman, privileged to have carried out Royal duties and served in many wonderful places.  I returned to the parish in 1986 and went back to the world of Construction before leaving to run Autism Charity, an organisation whose creation I first proposed to a small number of like-minded individuals and of which I was the founding Chair. After time spent running AJ and then Mind Jersey and working for Shelter Trust, I took up the post of Employability Training Manager for the Back to Work Team, working across States department to help islanders successfully secure employment during the worst recession in living memory. I then returned to the world of construction, and I am currently a Director and the General Manager of SGB Hire (CI) Ltd.

I have a long record of public service in Jersey and currently I am the Chair of the Board of Governors of Haute Vallee School, the Diversity and Inclusion Adviser to the Scout Association (and a Scout leader of some 25 years) and have been the Vice – Chair of the Jersey Construction Council main board and Chair of its Education and Training sub-Committee.

I am proud to be Jerseyman and I know what this amazing, diverse community can do when it needs to.   We all know that there is much to do, and we know that we need Government to step up and become much more effective, more open, and better at communication.  It needs to be bold and brave and not be scared to make evidence-based decisions.  The Jersey Alliance team, led by Sir Mark Boleat, is our best hope of getting the island back on track.

If you choose me to be your representative, I will work tirelessly to ensure that we tackle the many problems of inequity that surround us in all of the main areas of Housing, Health, Education and the Environment, but I intend to champion especially the areas of Education, Construction, music and the arts and the third Sector, all of which are vital to our beloved island.

I know that the decision to have larger constituencies and the abolition of the island-wide mandate are unpopular with many electors in Grouville and St Martin.  The Alliance is committed to reviewing the arrangements, and ideally would like the two parishes to have their own representatives.  And as the Alliance its contesting all nine constituencies it is giving the people of Jersey the chance to vote for the Government of their choice.
