After serving as a deputy and a Senator in the States between 2000-20O5, I found it to be a very lonely place working on my own.
It was hard and frustrating work at the end of which I felt I had achieved very little on behalf of the people I represented.
My desire to go back into the States was re-kindled when I read of the formation of the Jersey Alliance Party and saw the quality of the men and women involved.
By the time of the election in June, we hope to have between 15-20 candidates, all of them with experience at senior levels in either government, housing, charitable work, the law, journalism, or finance and with clearly defined and carefully developed policies. Working as a team, we make a formidable group of men and women who have practical and cost-effective solutions to solve those difficult problems we face in the future. Our priorities are:
Our leader is Sir Mark Boleat, a Jerseyman educated in the island, who has worked in London for many years before moving back to Jersey. He was knighted by Her Majesty for his contribution to the British finance industry and local government in London.
He has carried out various projects for the States of Jersey and was chairman of Andium Homes, the Jersey Development Company and the Jersey Competition Regulatory Authority. His work on population policy, housing, consumer, financial stability, and Jersey’s identity on behalf of the States has been recognised.
For the last six years I have been chairman of the First Tower Community Association and in that role, I initiated the scheme now known as the “floralisation” of the Martello Tower area working in conjunction with the Jersey Probation Service.
Last year with my friend, Tim Barrass, we successfully organised a 1,000-signature petition to save our local CHECKERS store from closure and I successfully campaigned to ensure that when the new sewage treatment works was built at Bellozanne, the sewage storage tanks would be covered ( which the then responsible Minister did not want to do) and the States finally decided they must do at a cost of £4.7 million.
I campaigned relentlessly against putting the new hospital at Overdale and spent four days at the public hearing making various arguments against its location there. As member of the St. Helier Roads Committee, I attended many meetings with the pro hospital group and kept insisting that it was obvious that traffic jams at Cheapside at various times would be inevitable.
