The JEA is now in place and any prospective candidates for this year’s elections are reminded that they are now required by Law to keep track of their campaign spending from 22nd February onwards.
The Island’s first ever Electoral Authority has been established and will oversee the Public elections in June 2022.
Following a successful recruitment process overseen by the Appointments Commission, Mr. John Everett, Mr. Alex Hodnett and Mrs. Ellie Sharples have been appointed to serve as the Chair and members of the JEA.
The postholders, who will serve a 4-year term on an honorary basis, will join the Judicial Greffier, Deputy Greffier of the States and a representative of the Parish Secretaries to provide oversight of the public elections process in Jersey.
Chairman John Everett said “I am pleased to have been appointed as the first JEA Chair. There is a lot of work ahead of us in the lead up to this year’s elections in June. The JEA and the vote.je website should be the first points of contact for anyone thinking of standing as a candidate, wishing to vote or wanting to know more about the election process in Jersey”.
The JEA has already met twice since it was formally established earlier this month and has confirmed some of the key dates for the forthcoming elections. The main electoral register will now close on Tuesday 10th May and anyone wishing to stand for election should submit their nomination forms between 11th and 13th May. The JEA has also recommended that the threshold for when donations to political parties should be declared should be set at £500 and this will be debated by the States Assembly at its next sitting in March.
“It is really important that anyone considering standing for election this year understands that they are required by Law to keep a record of any election related spending from 22nd February onwards. Whether that’s printing posters and leaflets or the setting up of a website, they must make a note of what they spend from that date onwards and include it in their expenditure submission after the elections.” Mr. Everett said.
The JEA will be conducting an audit of candidates’ expenditure after the elections to make sure everybody declares what they have spent and that they have kept within the spending limits.
