Islanders who are interested in improving the way in which elections are run in Jersey are being invited to join the new Jersey Electoral Authority (JEA) to help oversee the elections in 2022.

Deputy Carina Alves, Chair of the Privileges and Procedures Committee, which is establishing the JEA as part of changes to legislation agreed by the States Assembly earlier this year, said “If you have a working knowledge of (or keen interest in) elections, want voter turnout to increase in Jersey and you are a good team player then we hope you will apply to be a member of the JEA”.

“We are looking for up to 4 members of the public, one of whom will be the Chair of this new Body” said Deputy Alves. “You will be working alongside the Judicial Greffier, Greffier of the States and a representative of the Parishes to put forward ideas to ensure elections are run well, and that people have all the information they need to participate either as a candidate or as a voter.”

The JEA will oversee the nomination process, the conduct of candidates throughout the election process and the review of election expenses. It will also review candidate disputes and complaints and produce a report 6 months after the election with recommendations for improving the voting process in Jersey.

Applicants must be able to demonstrate that they will approach this work in a totally objective manner. The role is unpaid and the appointment will be for a 4-year period.

Deputy Alves added “The States Assembly has a strong commitment to diversity and we would really like the JEA to be a balanced group of people in terms of gender, ethnicity, age, disability, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, experience and skills and we encourage applications which will achieve that balance.”

For an informal discussion about the role, or to submit your CV and covering statement, outlining your interest in the role and relevant experience and skills, please contact the Deputy Greffier, Lisa Hart by email at  l.hart@gov.je.

The closing date is Friday 19th November and interviews will be held the week commencing 29th November.
