The Vote.je & Lovetheatre Play
“A great way for Islanders of all ages to understand the way voting in Jersey works.”
A play entitled ‘One Day’ toured secondary schools and colleges in Jersey during March to highlight the importance of voter registering and to encourage young people to vote. The play is a joint venture between LoveTheatre and Vote.je and aims to engage with young people to encourage them to vote.
Lovetheatre’s Michelle Smith said ”We were challenged by vote.je to make a show that is entertaining, informative and also persuasive, as ultimately the aim is to encourage and empower young people to get into a habit of voting. To get the youth in the booth! All of this whilst not being patronising, overwhelming or too dry”
“One Day…” follows the story of a boy in Jersey who has inaccurate preconceived ideas and does not consider that he has a role to play in any local politics. We follow his journey which leads to him becoming more engaged, whilst keeping it realistic about levels of excitement that are really involved in reading manifestos!”
The performers are all trained actors and are originally from Jersey –
- Alice Veitch
- Joss Macdonald
- Molly Byrne-Shore
Lisa Hart, Deputy Greffier of the States said, “Jersey is one of just 17 jurisdictions in the world that allows people under the age of 18 to vote and it is really important that young Islanders are encouraged to register and then use their vote to choose who represents them in the States Assembly. This play is a fun, powerful and memorable way of informing young people about our voting system. It’s also a great way for Islanders of all ages to understand the way voting in Jersey works.”
