Karen Shenton Stone

Candidate for Connétable in St. Martin

It has been a great privilege to have served the Parish as Connétable over the last four years and I am proud of what has been accomplished during this challenging period.

Delivering for St. Martin

I am committed to continue working hard to enhance Parish life and provide greater opportunities for parishioners to strengthen our wonderful community.

As Connétable, I secured funding for the La Vielle Êcole community facility through the unanimous approval of the States Assembly. The building now hosts M&S, Mercury Distribution, St. Martin Pharmacy, St. Martin Surgery, and Jersey Village Vets as tenants. I have overseen the refurbishment of the Parish Depot and the extension of the Village Tearoom, and steered St. Martin through the COVID-19 Pandemic.

The Village Green is of fundamental importance to St. Martin, and I will seek to expand the Green through the incorporation of a wetland area, following the generous gift of land by parishioners. Furthermore, planning permission for the Village Green playground has now been granted.

I will continue the transformation of the old granite Rectory Barn into a vibrant Community Centre.  I have secured funding of a donation of £83,000 to carry out preliminary surveys and the architect’s design. Further funding will be sought through donations to negate the cost to Parish Ratepayers.  The refurbished Barn will create opportunities for a range of artistic, cultural and social activities.

I will continue to work with the Parishes Climate Liaison Group and be an advocate for enhanced environmental practices in St. Martin. I also want to create new forums for young people to engage with Parish life and governance.

I will commit to ensuring that farmers and the rural economy receive the support they need to guarantee the future of agriculture in Jersey.

Delivering Within the Assembly:

The role of Connétable is vital to both the Parish and the States Assembly. If re-elected, I promise to use my experience from the multiple Scrutiny Panels and Committees I have served on to work with all Members within the States Assembly to deliver for Parishioners and Islanders.

I will build on my previous successes within the States Assembly and:

  • Deliver greater environmental protections to the Parish and the Island.
  • Support and scrutinise the delivery of the Task Force to Improve Women’s Safety.
  • Continue to advocate for greater gender equality and equity within the Island.
  • Improve quality of life & access to housing.
  • Support and deliver improvements to road safety for all users.
  • Fight for greater opportunities and support for Arts, Heritage and Culture in Jersey.

I will continue to defend the role of the Connétable and ensure that this position is maintained in a way that is responsive to the needs of contemporary Parish and Island life.

Together, we can build a fairer, safer, greener, more accountable, and more inclusive Island, and make St. Martin the best Parish to live in.  I would be honoured to have your support.

Thank you.
