Rob Ward

Candidate for Deputy St. Helier Central

During my first term as a Deputy for St Helier, I have proved myself a dedicated and hard working representative. I have brought a number of propositions for real change to the assembly. These include successful propositions to deliver a new youth and community centre in the north of town, introduce a bus pass for students and declare a climate emergency. I have also protected funding for organisations such as Beresford Street Kitchen and the Jersey Childcare Trust.

Most recently I won a proposition to protect the Gas Works site from overdevelopment and prioritise it for a much needed school. I have fought for much more, including free school meals, increases in the minimum wage, removing duty from biofuels, and landlord licensing to protect tenants and good landlords, which the wider Assembly failed to support. I have tabled more questions than any other member.

I have supported many constituents in a number of areas of specific need. I hold regular drop-in sessions at Springfield and am always available for contact via phone and email. I have campaigned for facilities and officers to support deputies to increase our ability to help our constituents. This is essential for us to maximise our deputy roles and do effective casework. I have the ability to act as an advocate for all in our community.

I am standing for re-election because I want to continue my work and complete the task of providing schools and youth facilities for the St Helier Central constituency. I will continue to represent you with strength and purpose. I will drive forward a progessive Education agenda, ending the constant cycle of employing expensive consultants, and instead, acting to improve opportunities for our young people and enable lifelong learning.

I have worked with small islands across the world through my role on the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association Committee on Climate Change. Jersey must play its part in leading the way and ensuring our response to climate change means a fair transition for all of our community. We can be a model for the rest of the world in our actions.

I chaired the Children’s, Education and Home Affairs Scrutiny Panel which has produced 24 comment papers, 7 full and detailed reports with 204 findings and 116 recommendations; lodged 19 amendments, sent over 85 letters and conducted 49 public hearings. I have demonstrated leadership qualities and have the ability to work not only with my Reform Jersey colleagues, but also to co-operate with  members across the assembly, to get the best outcomes for all.

We must build a strong economy that is fair to all who live in Jersey as we recover from the pandemic and face wider threats to our society.  With more Reform Jersey members in the Assembly, we can deliver more for the people of Jersey and provide the leadership to deliver a New Deal that puts fairness and security for all islanders at the heart of our politics.
