I am standing as an independent candidate who intends to run a low-cost campaign by distributing 40,000 basic flyers, locally printed, which will be delivered mostly by myself as I walk around the island in the days leading up to the election in order to meet as many people as possible. There will be no roadside advertising banners or posters.
I am MOTIVATED to stand because I believe that a considerable amount of our MONEY has, and still is, BEING WASTED. So, my main aim if elected would be to seek meaningful savings in States expenditure. Presently many millions of pounds are being spent on “computers, consultants and digitalisation – over £60m has been budgeted over the next 3 years on IT.
Also “revenue transformation”, “IT improvement programmes”, and “digital care plans” are being proposed for many more millions.
Who is responsible and accountable for all this?
There are more questions than answers!
As a former States member, I was:
- Instrumental with the formation of the Jersey Consumer Council and its Chairman for over 16 years,
- Brought about the introduction of a Financial Services Ombudsman
- Very sceptical about the introduction of ministerial government and I believe now is the time for a thorough review to measure effectiveness and accountability
- I have been involved for over 10 years, chairing a number of Scrutiny Panels and was a Vice Chairman and member of the Public Accounts Committee
- Responsible for bringing numerous Reports, Propositions & Amendments to the States in the public interest,
- A school governor for over 10 years,
- Pleased to assist many people with their individual problems,
- Honoured to represent Jersey at the British / Irish Parliamentary Association for many years,
I do not believe it is appropriate to make a string of promises which are difficult if not impossible to keep, however, if elected, I would promote and support-
- More money being given to charities, many of whom provide invaluable services and effective community support for vulnerable people,
- The formation of a Tourism and Travel Board, consisting of a political lead and accountability with industry representation
- More openness and publishing of information about States spending and decision-making to fill the massive gap that presently exists between the people and the politics,
- A thorough review of ministerial government. Are we really any better off after 20 years?
- Sensible restraint on States spending, while maintaining and improving essential services
Removing GST from food, which is achievable, at a cost of about £10M the predictions are that it will raise over £140 million in 2029, so with better and more focused States spending, this is achievable, to help us all with record increases in food prices over the last 5 years.
