I am standing for Senator at a challenging time to offer my political and business experience to help colleagues restore fiscal discipline and create a strong future vision. If elected, my four main priorities are:
- Making Jersey more affordable — by updating and implementing an anti-inflation strategy with policies that help ease the cost of living burden on families.
- Economic Growth — Create a competitive, business-friendly regulatory environment, remove barriers to business, incentivise innovation, attract inward investment and encourage new growth sectors such as AI, fintech and medical tourism.
- Cutting red tape and bureaucracy — to support businesses, job creation and a more competitive economy.
- Bringing government spending under control — by redesigning service delivery, identifying efficiencies and partnering more with private and third sectors.
Jersey remains somewhere to be immensely proud of — a wonderful place to live and work — but the pressures facing Islanders are real and growing.
The cost of living continues to rise, housing is increasingly difficult to access, and there is a clear expectation that government should act more decisively and deliver more effectively. An example is Planning, which needs to redesign services to deliver faster.
These challenges require more than good intentions. They require experience, sound judgement and the ability to produce results. Jersey needs more proven leaders who can take decisions and see them through.
Over the past eight years in the private sector, I have managed an investment business and served as a non-executive director for a number of organisations including Genuine Jersey. I have seen first-hand the pressures facing businesses, employees and families, reinforcing something I have long believed: discipline, focus and follow-through matter.
Previously as Economic Development Minister I was delivery focused. We created Locate Jersey to attract inward investment — a model others followed — and launched a business incubator to support small businesses. We created Digital Jersey and Jersey Business. We strengthened air routes, including the introduction of easyJet and Heathrow services.
We merged the Harbour and Airport, delivering £1 million of annual savings and removing many millions more of future capital costs from taxpayers.
As Treasury Minister, I brought forward the Medium Term Financial Plan, ensuring fiscal discipline. The independent Fiscal Policy Panel has consistently advised in recent reports that we rebuild our reserves. That has not happened and must. I also expanded the student finance scheme to widen access to university for Islanders, reflecting the growing cost pressures on middle-income families and the importance of investing in our future.
This election is an opportunity for Jersey to choose a more affordable, competitive and confident future — one that creates opportunities for future generations. With your support, I would be honoured to play a part in delivering it.
