I have had the honour of being the Connétable of St John for just over five years. now and It has been a privilege to represent our Parish, and to work alongside the dedicated municipal team and all our committed volunteers to deliver for our St John community. I hope that during my time as Connétable, I have demonstrated to you, my ability to lead the Parish and also be an effective member of the States.
You may have seen that in announcing my candidacy I have made it clear that, if elected, I will not be seeking re-appointment as a Minister. Just over two years ago, following the change of Government, I took the difficult decision, having been asked by many colleagues, to serve as Infrastructure Minister for the remainder of the term. During my time in Government, I’ve continued to prioritise my role as Connétable. I’ve particularly enjoyed my weekly Parish drop-in sessions, having held over 230 engagements, at the time of writing and having met with over 1,050 people. When I first stood to be Connétable, I said my objective was about “connecting” the Parish and I believe we have made significant progress in a number of areas. Last year saw our very successful Liberation 80 celebrations. A dedicated team ensured that we involved as many parishioners as possible, showing just how connected our community is.
Within the Parish we have delivered the long-awaited Road Safety improvements, although there is clearly more to do especially to make it easier to get to and from the Supermarket and progress is being made here, albeit slowly.
I am pleased with the introduction of the Number 10 bus route, linking St John with the Enid Quenault Health Centre in the West and the Zoo in the East. We now also have larger buses at peak times and this summer there will be some 37 departures each day from the Church to Town, Monday to Friday
I have also worked with Jersey Water to get mains connections to more homes in the Parish, and I’m delighted that a further 30 homes in St John should be connected during the Summer. Mains Drains remains a been a priority, and with significant work in and around Bonne Nuit enabling up to 50 homes being able to connect, as well as the £8million investment on the Northern Sewer extension.
There is work still to do, including the provision of more right size properties and Provison of amenity spaces, in both Sion and the long awaited Memorial Garden.
I look forward to speaking with as many of you parishioners as possible before 7 June.
