Barbara Ward is standing for re-election as Deputy for St Clement for a second term, as an independent candidate. She has been an active member in the Parish, attending monthly coffee mornings, surgeries, parish assemblies, the Parish Battle of Flowers Team and assisting individuals with their issues.
She wishes to continue supporting her parish by maintaining close involvement with the whole parish team, volunteers and most importantly the parishioners.
She has been an active politician building on her lifelong skills and former 45 years nursing experience: as a Member of the Health and Social Scrutiny Panel, States Employment Board member. Then following a change of government in January 2024 as an Assistant Health Minister, member of the Legislation Advisory Panel and member of the Policy and Procedures Pensions Sub-Committee. She was instrumental in bringing in the ‘Rent a Room Scheme’ in 2022 and has made numerous speeches in the States Chamber.
Previously, for 25 years was the Royal College of Nursing Union negotiator, pensions representative for 30 years and member of the States Employment Forum for 10 years –These skills and experiences have been essential for her various roles but especially in her present position as Assistant Health Minister with the Health Ministerial team for the past 2 years, working with Policy officers, Health & Community Senior Leadership Teams, the Health Advisory Board and Charities.
She has developed good teamwork relationships, needed going forward by maintaining a Health Ministerial team to provide stability and continuity now and for the next 4 years – the job is far from finished and wishes to remain part of the Health team through these vital changes for our islanders by: ensuring our new hospital is built; staffed well; up and running and be part of the new and exciting Health Partnership Board.
The Deputy has represented the Island through the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association: Women Parliamentarians, and at a major global CPA conference.
She is passionate in improving provisions for older persons, who are an untapped resource for our community, with lots to offer: We need Tax incentives for older persons returning back into the work force and address the ‘double taxation aspect on Social Security payments, which affects all islanders and Stop the government withholding States Grant money, which should go into our Social Security Scheme only to pay for the governments ‘overspends’. Our Social Security scheme is the bedrock ‘contributory insurance’ scheme for all islanders and must be fully protected. We also need the introduction of a Carers Allowance.
Barbara has the ability and the energy to focus on her Parish and Island wide needs I hope the Parishioners of St Clement will vote for me to continue representing them. Thank you. 07797761560.
