Dear Parishioners of Saint Mary, Saint Ouen and Saint Peter,
I am standing for election because I believe that my professional experience as an accountant and a lecturer has given me the skills to represent you effectively as a Deputy.
My professional background
After several years teaching mathematics in secondary schools, I trained as an accountant at the National Audit Office, where I gained an in-depth knowledge of the management of public money in the UK.
I joined Moore Stephens in London in 2011 and worked, at levels from Audit Senior to Senior Manager, in the International Institutions and Donor Assurance group. This gave me experience of public, private and third sector organisations as well as of grant funding and procurement processes in a wide range of countries including many EU states, Haiti, Bangladesh and Ethiopia.
I returned to Jersey in 2018 to take up a post as Finance Operations Manager for Ports of Jersey, based at the airport and left that post in October 2021 to spend more time on my work as an Associate Lecturer for the Open University.
I live in St Peter’s village and serve on the committee of the Saint Peter’s Youth and Community Centre as Treasurer.
A Reform Jersey Candidate
I know that many people remain wary of political parties in Jersey. When I first decided to stand in the 2022 election, I intended to stand as an independent. I then became convinced that with the system of Ministerial Government the island needs parties. I joined Reform Jersey and selected as their candidate in the 2022 election after which I become party chair. I am now standing again for election as a Reform Jersey candidate.
At its best party politics is not partisan. Over the last two years, Reform Jersey has shown that we are capable of working effectively with independents in a coalition government. As a party we have worked, among other things, to bring down the cost of GP appointments, increase the funding for childcare for 2-3 year olds and establish the ‘First-Step’ scheme to help first-time buyers.
I expect the next four years to bring considerable challenges to the island, with pressure on public finances and rapid technological change. The island needs States Members who have a depth of experience, the ability to listen and to understand, awareness of the limitations of their own knowledge and a commitment to working for the for the common good. If elected, I will work with my Reform colleagues and independent States Members to address the cost of living, prepare Jersey for the challenges of the future and restore accountability to government.
Please consider giving me one of your votes on 7 June. Thank you.
