I am standing as an independent candidate for Senator to deliver positive change for Jersey.

I spent over 30 years working in Jersey’s public service – for the States Police, Probation, Customs and Immigration, and as a Director of Policy. I was a founding member of Autism Jersey and have also been an independent member of the Public Accounts Committee and an academic lecturer.

In 2022, I was elected as Deputy for St Brelade and have served as Minister for Justice and Home Affairs and Chair of the Corporate Services Scrutiny Panel. I have worked to address key issues that matter to the public, including affordable housing, support for retail, tourism, hospitality, and improving community safety.

I have a strong local policy background and consider issues on their merits, following an evidence-based approach. I have worked across the political spectrum to deliver community-based policies that work for Jersey. At this time of global instability, I can offer the unity, experience and leadership that we need.

If elected, I will support islanders with the cost of living. We must reconsider the flat-rate charge for freight imports which has led to rising prices. We should increase the Community Costs Bonus, Cold Weather Bonus, and Christmas Bonus annually with inflation and support more pensioners through Pension Plus. We must also keep parking charges as low as possible.

I will support first-time buyers, those looking to buy a family home, and an improved rental market. In 2024, I brought a successful proposition which requires 50% of housing on the Waterfront to be affordable for first-time buyers.

We need to control public spending and live within our means. I support reinstating the full grant to the Social Security Fund, replenishing the Stabilisation Fund, and returning to a culture of long-term prudence. We must prioritise improvements to the delivery of front-line services, notably health and education.

I support Jersey’s existing economic strengths, encouraging appropriate diversification, improving our competitiveness, and enabling growth. We must improve our connectivity with the Channel Islands, the UK, and Europe.

To maintain a stable population, we need to retain and develop local talent, improve opportunities for young people, and make Jersey more affordable. We also need a flexible work permit system to attract people with skills. We must also protect our unique environment and coastline, to keep Jersey special.

I am committed to keeping Jersey safe. We must deliver on the recommendations of the Violence Against Women and Girls Taskforce, protect funding for the emergency services, and promote greater community cohesion.

I will continue to champion honorary and voluntary service. We should increase support for charities by making better use of the Dormant Bank Accounts Fund.

Please vote Dr Helen Miles for Senator.
