Karl Care because I do.

As I sit here thinking about writing to you, I have two thoughts. Do I Care about what I think you want from a senator, or do I Care for what I truly believe is right for you and right for Jersey. I care for Jersey and first I care about its people. I’m a people’s person in fact I care so much that care now plays a huge part of my life. Some of us are born carers and some are forced into it whilst others do not. Overall, we are a caring society and that is good because a caring society shows that we are sophisticated and intelligent and understand that caring is not just about concern for others but ultimately, it’s about caring for yourself. We have already been cared for as children and on life’s journey some will care for others and ourselves before we go. So, what’s the theme here, yes CARE. Let’s call it Karl Care.

Karl Care has been in service all my adult life from caring for my son with a serious mental illness to now caring for my wife. As I said some of us are born carers. Some of you will know me through my community interest project Step55 Club where health wellbeing and social inclusion are at the heart of what we do.

At Step 55 we embrace the power of community to help itself. Healthy active and happy lives build a resilience for that time when we dig deep into our reserves to live happy independent lives as long as possible, so we can make choices on our own care. You really do have to look after yourself to be able to look after and provide for others. A drop of prevention truly is worth a bucket load of cure. Being active happy and connected three hugely powerful words that encompasses how we can live work and have quality of life well into retirement. All achievable through the power of community.

At Step55 we empower everyday people to lead. We embrace the skill and passion for social wellbeing through our community led activity classes from Line Dance, Tai Chi, Eastern Inspired Movement, Ballet, Yoga, through social empowerment, nurturing skill and passion for the rest of us. I said this at the last election – we need to support social enterprise. People with great ideas that can address Health, Care, Innovation, Support Younger Families, Mental Health, Financial Technology. The shoots are there and I think Jersey is well placed to show case how this huge resource can be allowed to flourish. With a new mindset and structure this is what I will do.
