The present is intolerable; we must change it.
I am a lawyer and represent employees in the Employment Tribunal. Havre des Pas is home.
For over 30 years I have campaigned for social justice. In 2014 I was elected as a States Member.
As a candidate for the newly formed political party PEOPLE FIRST, along with fellow candidate Andrew Sinclair, standing for Deputy, we offer a team with competence and experience to St Helier South constituents.
PEOPLE FIRST is a political party of a new type: one of action, one of struggle and dedicated to achieve results for the People of St Helier South. We punch above our weight.
The war on Iran will soon impact with inflation and disruption. We must strengthen state capacity. The next generation of Islanders must have a future here.
PEOPLE FIRST supports a well-resourced and accountable public sector; not cuts and austerity. Quality services must be funded from increased taxation on corporations and the super wealthy. The ‘low tax, low spend’ model is broken. Finance should serve us. Jersey’s government has for long been run for the rich and privileged, ignoring the social and economic interests of working people.
PEOPLE FIRST will: end precarious contracts; replace minimum wage with a real Living Wage; support quality affordable childcare for working parents; establish a Law Centre for advice and legal representation; strengthen employment law; fight discrimination and racism; promote trade union rights in retail, hospitality and health care.
The justice system in Jersey is broken. Unaffordable legal services preclude justice.
PEOPLE FIRST believe decent accommodation should be a right for all. No one should live in a slum. We must protect private renters from poor quality housing and unfair rent increases, whilst developing an extensive public island-wide housing programme.
Health is our priority. We will: deliver the new hospital; recruit and retain professional staff; ensure fair pay and conditions, end management bullying; deliver fully funded mental health, substance abuse and suicide prevention strategies. Currently reduced to tokenism, reprioritise children’s rights.
PEOPLE FIRST will promote Channel Islands cooperation; so often ignored.
Democratic elections are achievable through one category of States Member all elected on the same day in constituencies of equal size. We demand more Deputy seats for St Helier and achieve fair representation of all urban areas. Elect an Assembly Speaker to replace the Bailiff.
To combat Climate Change, we must move from fossil fuel dependency and honour zero-emissions commitments; improve public transport; prioritise travel infrastructure for bicycles; promote electric vehicle charge points; develop, in conjunction with France, our abundant tidal and wind resources.
PEOPLE FIRST promises to raise concerns early, challenge decisions; represent local sentiment.
