Engaging young voters through theatre in education

Published: 5th May 2022

Vote.je has partnered with Love Theatre to engage and inform Island students about the upcoming election on 22 June. Hundreds of students enjoyed the live performances about the power of voting and were shown how, in just two minutes, they could register online to be on the main electoral register before 10 May.

The newly created script was delivered by a team of talented local actors who brought the topic to life with a mix of local references, international trailblazers and significant figures in the history of democracy. A video recording of the play is available to view on the Vote.je YouTube channel (see below), and will be distributed to all schools and colleges who were not able to enjoy it live.

Jenny O’Brien, Head of Digital and Public Engagement, said: “We’ve been delighted with the number of students that attended the performances and hope this interest continues throughout the election period. The Vote.je team were on hand at all the performances to answer questions and it was brilliant to hear the issues that matter most to our youngest voters.

“Independent research following the 2018 election found that knowledge of Jersey’s political system and information about the candidates were the biggest barriers to voting. We hope that presenting information about the system in this dynamic way will help address the first issue. Information about the 2022 candidates will be shared from 18 May, once the formal nominations have been received and approved by the Jersey Electoral Authority.”
