Candidate Course

Standing for election can feel like a daunting prospect, but it doesn’t have to be. 

If you’re considering putting yourself forward, this 7-week course is designed to help you learn more about the roles and responsibilities of States Members and to support you in preparing your election campaign.

The course is open to everyone, whether you’ve already decided to stand or you’re just exploring the possibility. Each week covers different topics and you can attend as many or as few sessions as you would like. There’s also the option to join online.

Attendance is completely optional and there is no obligation to stand for election if you attend the course.

Week 1: 28 January – 6:30 – 8:30pm

  • Roles you might want to take on and the appointment process

Week 3: 11 February – 6:30 – 8:30pm

  • Hustings, Manifestos, Videos, Expenses and Nomination Forms
  • Safety – on and offline
  • Using social media effectively
Week 4: 25 February – 6:30 – 8:30pm
  • The role of the Jersey Electoral Authority
  • Rules on display of election advertising materials
  • Commissioner for Standards
  • Public speaking and dealing with the media

  • Creating inclusive communications for Islanders with a disability
