What are Hustings?

Hustings are public meetings where election candidates answer questions directly from voters.

They give voters the chance to:

  • Hear each candidate’s priorities
  • Compare their views side-by-side
  • Better understand each candidate’s views
  • See how candidates act under pressure
  • Find out how well candidates understand key topics and how they would tackle challenges or difficult issues

Hustings are held in venues such as Parish Halls and community centres. All hustings are FREE to attend and open to everyone.

Candidate-organised Hustings are filmed and made available on the Vote.je YouTube channel for playback.

Types of Hustings

The States Assembly has different types of elected Members and there will be Hustings for candidates standing to be:

  • Connétable of a Parish
  • Deputy of a constituency
  • Senator representing the whole Island

Hustings are usually hosted by an individual who acts as a neutral referee who takes questions from the audience and ensures that each candidate has fair opportunity to answer.

Candidates are given a set amount of time to respond to each question, often limited to one minute, and the speaking order rotates so that each candidate has the chance to speak first.

Sometimes groups or organisations who are keen to encourage political engagement and voter turnout in the community invite candidates to their own hustings events.
