About the roles for election

Election candidates are split into 3 categories

Senators

On Wednesday 19th October 2011 Islanders elected 4 Senators to the States: Sir Philip Bailhache; Ian Gorst; Francis Le Gresley and Lyndon Farnham.

Senators represent the whole Island and first joined in the States in 1948. There are 12 Senators at the moment, but plans to introduce a general election in Jersey will see the number reduce to 8 over the next few years.

The ballot paper for Senators is white. Islanders were able to vote for up to 4 Senators in the October 2011 elections.

Connétables

The Connétable is the elected head of the parish. Connétables have been members of the States since the earliest record of States meetings. They are voted in by their parishioners and get a seat in the States automatically. The ballot paper for Connétables is blue.

8 Connétables were returned unopposed in the October 2011 elections. Steve Pallett was elected as Connétable in St. Brelade, Deidre Mezbourian was elected as Connétable in St. Lawrence, Michael Paddock was elected in St. Ouen and Sadie Rennard was elected in St. Saviour.

Deputies

On Wednesday 19th October 2011 there were elections for 26 of the 29 Deputies.

The office of Deputy has been in existence for over 100 years. Deputies are elected in 17 districts which correspond to parish boundaries. Larger parishes, such as St Helier and St Brelade, are divided up into more than one district to make sure the population is represented. The ballot paper for Deputies is yellow.

The two Deputies of St. Lawrence and the Deputy of Trinity were elected unopposed. There were elections for Deputies in all the other Parishes. Candidates were elected as follows:

St Helier No.1: James Baker; Trevor Pitman; Judy Martin

St Helier No.2: Rod Bryans; Shona Pitman; Geoff Southern
